Civil Engineering – Temporary Traffic Control Design

Atlas provided Temporary Traffic Control Plan (TTCP) design for multiple locations throughout the City as a subconsultant to MWM Design Group while working closely with the sidewalk contractor. Completion of sidewalks at these locations was vital to removing physical barriers and encouraging walking as a mode of transportation and improving mobility for people with disabilities. Atlas also performed pre- and postconstruction as well as progress report documentation for various projects throughout the City. In total, Atlas participated in more than 5,000 linear feet of sidewalk projects as part of the 2017 Local Mobility Field Engineering for Pedestrian, Bikeway and Urban Trail Rotation List.

The Manor Rd & Loyola Lane intersection sidewalk and ramp improvements in East Austin presented several challenges. The presence of existing bike lanes created the need to safely merge the bicycle traffic with the adjacent travel lanes in order to create the work space needed by the contractor. Pedestrian handling was also a significant challenge at this site. The fact that the work was taking place at an intersection to add or replace substandard curb ramps created pedestrian specific design challenges. Because there were no adjacent crosswalks near the project, the standard COA sidewalk closure detail was not applicable in this situation. Therefore, Atlas designed special pedestrian handling plans to maintain an accessible path throughout construction. Atlas designed, submitted, and gained ROWMAN approval of the TCP in seven (7) business days.
